What Happens During HoLEP
Anesthesia

Frequently asked questions
How is HoLEP different from TURP?
TURP uses electrical energy to cut prostate tissue from the inside of the urethra and is best for prostates under 80g. HoLEP uses a holmium laser to enucleate the entire obstructing tissue from inside the prostate capsule and works on any prostate size. HoLEP has less blood loss, shorter catheter time, and more durable results, but requires a more specialized surgeon.
What prostate size is HoLEP best for?
HoLEP has no upper size limit. It's the preferred option for prostates over 80g where TURP becomes less effective. It also works well for medium prostates (40-80g) when the patient wants the most durable result available.
Will I lose ejaculation after HoLEP?
Retrograde ejaculation (semen flowing into the bladder instead of out) occurs in 70-80% of HoLEP patients. It's not harmful and erection is preserved, but it does affect fertility. If preserving forward ejaculation is a priority, Rezum or UroLift may be better options for smaller prostates.
How long is the hospital stay and catheter time?
Most patients stay one night in hospital and go home the morning after surgery. The urinary catheter stays in place for 24-48 hours. Light activity can resume within a few days · most patients return to work within 7-10 days.
