Key takeaways

LGD-4033 (ligandrol) is an experimental selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). It is not approved as a medicine anywhere in the world, including Thailand.

It suppresses your own testosterone and lowers HDL ("good") cholesterol, and it has been linked to drug-induced liver injury in published case reports.

It has been banned in all sport since 2008, and independent testing shows most products sold online as SARMs are mislabelled or contaminated.

There is no safe, supervised dose for muscle building. A Menscape doctor can instead assess low testosterone or muscle loss and offer treatments that are actually approved.

01

What LGD-4033 is & how it works

LGD-4033, also called ligandrol, is an experimental selective androgen receptor modulator, or SARM. It was designed to stimulate muscle and bone growth while acting more selectively than anabolic steroids. It has never been approved as a medicine by any drug regulator.

SARMs bind to the same androgen receptors in muscle and bone that testosterone uses. That can add lean muscle in the short term, which is why LGD-4033 is misused in bodybuilding. But because it switches those receptors on, the brain reads the signal as "enough androgen" and shuts down the body's own testosterone production.

It was first developed by a pharmaceutical company and later tested in early trials for muscle loss after hip fracture, under the code VK5211. That programme did not lead to approval for any use. Today LGD-4033 exists only as a research chemical and a grey-market supplement, not as a registered medicine.

  1. Binds androgen receptors

LGD-4033 attaches to the same receptors in muscle and bone that testosterone normally activates.¹

  2. Signals muscle growth

This can raise lean muscle mass over a few weeks, the effect people chase for bodybuilding.

  3. The body senses excess androgen

The brain reads the extra activity as a surplus and cuts its own testosterone and LH output.

  4. Suppression & side effects follow

Natural testosterone falls, HDL cholesterol drops, and in some people liver enzymes rise.¹

Getting LGD-4033 in Thailand

Thai FDA status

LGD-4033 is not registered with the Thai FDA as a medicine, supplement or food. Under the Drug Act B.E. 2510, importing or selling an unregistered drug is an offence, so there is no legal, quality-controlled supply.⁶

What Menscape does

Menscape does not prescribe or supply SARMs. A doctor can, however, look at the underlying goal (muscle loss, low energy, low testosterone) and offer treatments that are approved, dosed properly and monitored.

The grey market

LGD-4033 is sold online and in some gyms as a "research chemical." An independent lab analysis of such products found only about half actually contained the SARM on the label, and many held other undeclared drugs.²

Thai Drug Act, B.E. 2510. Medicines must be registered before sale. Products marketed as SARMs are unregistered, their real contents are not verified, and nobody is accountable for what you receive.

03

Does it work? The evidence

The honest answer is that very little is known about LGD-4033 in humans. It has been through only a single published Phase 1 safety study — 76 healthy young men, dosed for 21 days. That study showed it can raise lean body mass over three weeks and was tolerated short-term, but it was never designed or long enough to prove real-world benefit or lasting safety.¹

A later trial in older adults recovering from hip fracture, run under the code VK5211, did not lead to approval for any indication, and the compound remains experimental. There are no long-term human studies, and none at all supporting the muscle-building use it is sold for. "No evidence of harm over three weeks" is not the same as "safe."

04

Side effects & who shouldn't take it

Even in 21 days

The one human trial found dose-dependent suppression of natural testosterone and a drop in HDL ("good") cholesterol. Users also report acne, mood swings and testicular shrinkage.¹

Serious risks

Published case reports link LGD-4033 to drug-induced liver injury, sometimes needing hospital care.⁵ Testosterone suppression can persist for weeks or months after stopping, which can affect mood, energy and fertility.

Not safe for anyone as a supplement

Because it is unapproved and unmonitored, there is no group for whom self-use is safe. It is especially dangerous for women (virilization), anyone under 18, and men with liver or heart risk factors.

Contamination & doping

Grey-market products may contain other steroids or stimulants, so effects and interactions are unpredictable. LGD-4033 will also trigger a positive doping test in any tested sport.

05

Alternatives & combinations

Prescription · if clinically low

Testosterone therapy (TRT)

For men with genuinely low, symptomatic testosterone confirmed by blood tests, doctor-supervised testosterone replacement is an approved and monitored option — unlike a SARM.

Foundation · evidence-based

Training & nutrition

Structured resistance training with enough protein and sleep remains the most reliable, side-effect-free way to build muscle. A doctor can rule out medical causes of muscle loss first.

Diagnostic first

Hormone & metabolic work-up

Fatigue, low muscle and low libido often have a treatable cause. Blood tests can identify low testosterone, thyroid or metabolic issues before any treatment is considered.

How a consultation works at Menscape

Menscape Clinic Bangkok consultation room

Book a consultation to talk through your options.

  1. Message us on WhatsApp or LINE

Five minutes on your phone: your goals, symptoms, health history and any compounds or supplements you already use. It is confidential and PDPA-protected.

  2. Doctor consultation

A licensed Thai physician reviews your case by video call or in clinic at Asoke, and is straight with you about what SARMs do and do not do.

  3. Evidence-based plan

If there is a treatable issue such as low testosterone, the doctor discusses approved, monitored options. Menscape does not prescribe or supply SARMs.

  4. Follow-up & monitoring

Any approved treatment is tracked with blood tests and reviews, so its benefits and risks are watched over time rather than guessed at.

The doctor decides. A consultation is not a purchase and never includes SARMs. If your goal can be met safely, the doctor will explain how; if not, they will tell you plainly.

I understand the appeal, but LGD-4033 shuts down your own testosterone and has been linked to liver injury, with almost no human safety data behind it. If you want to build muscle or fix low energy, let us first find out what is actually going on.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy LGD-4033 over the counter in Thailand?

No. It is not a registered medicine, supplement or food, so it cannot be sold legally over the counter or in a pharmacy. Products offered online as SARMs are unregistered and unverified, and selling them is an offence under the Drug Act.

Is LGD-4033 (ligandrol) legal to use?

It is not approved as a medicine anywhere, and importing or selling it as an unregistered drug is illegal in Thailand. There is no lawful, quality-controlled supply, so anything you find carries legal and safety risk.

Does LGD-4033 actually build muscle?

A single 21-day trial showed a short-term rise in lean mass, but there is no evidence it is safe or effective for real-world muscle building, and no long-term human data at all. Short-term tolerability is not proof of safety.

What are the main dangers?

Suppression of your own testosterone, a drop in HDL cholesterol, and published case reports of liver injury. Grey-market products are also frequently mislabelled or laced with other undeclared drugs.

Will it show up on a drug test?

Yes. SARMs including LGD-4033 have been on the WADA prohibited list since 2008 and are routinely detected. Athletes have received bans for it, sometimes from contaminated supplements they did not know contained a SARM.

Is a "PCT" enough to recover my testosterone after a cycle?

There is no proven, safe protocol. Testosterone suppression can last weeks to months, and self-managed "post-cycle therapy" using other unapproved drugs only adds risk. A doctor should check your levels and guide recovery.

I already used LGD-4033 — what should I do?

Stop and see a doctor. Simple blood tests can check your testosterone, cholesterol and liver enzymes, and a physician can help you recover safely and watch for any lasting effects.

What can Menscape offer instead?

A consultation to find out whether there is a treatable cause of low muscle, energy or libido, and approved, monitored treatments such as testosterone therapy where it is clinically appropriate. Menscape does not prescribe SARMs.
