Key takeaways
Vardenafil is an oral prescription medicine (a PDE5 inhibitor) for erectile dysfunction, a treatable medical condition, not a lifestyle or performance product.
It works only with sexual stimulation, usually within 25–60 minutes, and its effect lasts about 4–5 hours.
In Thailand, PDE5 inhibitors are specially-controlled drugs (ยาควบคุมพิเศษ) that legally require a doctor's prescription; ED pills sold in bars, markets and unlicensed websites are a major counterfeit risk.
Vardenafil can slightly prolong the heart's QT interval, so it is not for everyone, and a doctor must check your heart history and medicines before prescribing it.
01
What vardenafil is & how it works
Vardenafil is an oral prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), meaning difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It belongs to the same class as sildenafil and tadalafil, the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
An erection depends on blood flow. During sexual arousal the body releases nitric oxide in the penis, which raises a signalling molecule called cGMP that relaxes the smooth muscle and lets blood fill the tissue. An enzyme, PDE5, breaks cGMP down. Vardenafil blocks PDE5, so cGMP lasts longer and the natural erection response works more reliably.
Vardenafil does not create desire and does nothing without sexual stimulation. It restores a mechanism rather than overriding it, and it treats the symptom rather than the underlying cause. That is why ED always deserves a proper medical assessment. It can be an early sign of heart, hormonal or metabolic problems.
It is one of several treatment options. Whether vardenafil, another tablet, or a different approach suits you depends on your health history, other medicines and how you respond. That is what the doctor's assessment is for.
Arousal releases nitric oxide
Sexual stimulation triggers the release of nitric oxide in the erectile tissue.
Nitric oxide raises cGMP
cGMP relaxes the smooth muscle in the penis so blood can flow in and produce an erection.
PDE5 normally ends it
The enzyme PDE5 breaks cGMP down, which is part of why an erection can be hard to get or keep.
Vardenafil blocks PDE5
With PDE5 inhibited, cGMP lasts longer and the natural response works more reliably, but only with stimulation.¹

Getting vardenafil in Thailand
Thai FDA status
PDE5 inhibitors are prescription medicines in Thailand, classified as specially-controlled drugs (ยาควบคุมพิเศษ) that legally require a doctor's prescription, not just a pharmacist. Vardenafil is sold in Thailand under brands such as Levitra, alongside registered sildenafil and tadalafil products.⁴
How to get it through Menscape
Menscape's day-to-day ED formulary centres on sildenafil and tadalafil, which suit most men. Vardenafil is not kept on the shelf. If a doctor decides it is the right option for you, it is ordered per patient after your consultation, so there is no same-day pickup for it.
Safety vs the grey market
Counterfeit ED tablets are widespread in Thailand, sold in bars, night markets and unlicensed websites, often with the wrong dose, no active ingredient, or dangerous contaminants. A prescription route means the product, the dose and the doctor behind it are all accountable.
Thai FDA warning. The regulator repeatedly warns against buying erectile-dysfunction medicines from unlicensed online sellers and informal vendors. Counterfeits are common and no one is accountable for what you receive.⁷
03
Does it work? The evidence
Vardenafil is a well-established ED treatment, first approved in 2003 and studied in large randomised, placebo-controlled trials. In the pivotal studies, about 80% of men reported improved erections on vardenafil, compared with roughly 30% on placebo, with significant gains on the standard erectile-function questionnaire (IIEF).²
Head to head, the major PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil) deliver broadly similar success rates; a large network meta-analysis found that no single agent is clearly superior for everyone. They differ mainly in onset, how long they last, food effects and side-effect profile, so the best one is the one that fits your body and routine. Vardenafil's window is shorter than tadalafil's, while tadalafil's daily option suits men who would rather not plan ahead.⁶

Side effects & who shouldn't take it
Common side effects
Headache, facial flushing, a blocked or runny nose, and indigestion are the most common; dizziness can occur. Vardenafil causes fewer visual side effects than sildenafil because it acts less on the eye's PDE6 enzyme. Most effects are mild and pass as the drug wears off.¹
Serious but rare
Seek urgent care for an erection lasting over 4 hours (priapism), which can permanently damage tissue. Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, or sudden hearing loss, are rare but mean you should stop the drug and get immediate medical attention.
Not suitable for
Anyone taking nitrate heart medicines (for angina) or riociguat must never take vardenafil, because the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. It is also avoided in men whose heart condition makes sex unsafe, in congenital long QT syndrome, in severe liver disease, and after a recent stroke or heart attack.
Heart, QT and interactions
Vardenafil can slightly prolong the heart's QT interval, so it is used cautiously with class IA or class III anti-arrhythmic drugs and in men prone to rhythm problems. Alpha-blockers (for prostate or blood pressure) and strong interacting drugs such as some antifungals and HIV medicines can raise vardenafil levels, so tell the doctor everything you take.

Alternatives & combinations
Oral · usually in stock
Sildenafil
The original PDE5 inhibitor, taken on demand about 30–60 minutes before sex. It is one of the mainstays Menscape keeps in stock.
Oral · longest-acting
Tadalafil
Lasts up to 36 hours and comes in a low daily dose for spontaneity; it also eases prostate (BPH) symptoms. A common first choice when planning ahead is awkward.
Second-line · in clinic
Injection therapy
When tablets are not enough, for example after prostate surgery or with diabetes, a doctor may discuss alprostadil-based penile injection therapy, which is taught and started under supervision.

Doctor consultation
A licensed Thai physician reviews your case by video call or in clinic at Asoke, checks your heart history and confirms whether a PDE5 inhibitor is safe and appropriate for you.
Prescription, if suitable
If the doctor approves, you receive a prescription. Menscape usually dispenses sildenafil or tadalafil; if vardenafil is the better fit, it is ordered per patient.
Follow-up & adjustment
The dose and choice of tablet are fine-tuned with your doctor based on how you respond and tolerate it. ED that does not respond is investigated further.
The doctor decides. Starting a conversation is not a commitment and does not guarantee a prescription. If a PDE5 inhibitor is not right for you, your doctor will explain why and discuss the alternatives.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy vardenafil over the counter in Thailand?
No. In Thailand, PDE5 inhibitors are specially-controlled drugs (ยาควบคุมพิเศษ) that legally require a doctor's prescription. Tablets sold openly in bars, markets or unlicensed websites are illegal and a well-known counterfeit risk.
How is vardenafil different from sildenafil and tadalafil?
All three block the same enzyme and work similarly well. Vardenafil's onset is comparable to sildenafil's, and its effect lasts about 4–5 hours, shorter than tadalafil's up-to-36-hour window. The differences that matter most are onset, duration, food effects and side effects, which is why the choice is individual.
How long before sex should I take it, and how long does it last?
Vardenafil is usually taken about 25–60 minutes before sex and works for roughly 4–5 hours. It only works with sexual stimulation, and a heavy, fatty meal can slow it down.
Is vardenafil safe for my heart?
For many men, yes, but it must never be combined with nitrate heart medicines or riociguat, and it needs caution if you have certain heart-rhythm conditions because it can slightly prolong the QT interval. This is exactly what the doctor's assessment checks.
Does vardenafil increase desire or boost performance?
No. It does not create desire and does nothing without arousal. It treats a medical problem by restoring blood flow so the natural erection response works, and it is not a stimulant or enhancer.
Why doesn't Menscape keep vardenafil on the shelf?
The everyday ED formulary centres on sildenafil and tadalafil, which suit most men. Vardenafil is a secondary option; if your doctor decides it is right for you, it is ordered per patient after your consultation rather than dispensed the same day.
What if vardenafil doesn't work for me?
First check it was taken correctly: enough time before sex, with sexual stimulation, and not after a heavy meal. If it still does not work after a few proper attempts, tell your doctor. The dose, the tablet or the whole approach can be changed, and persistent ED is worth investigating.
I already take vardenafil abroad. Can I continue it in Thailand?
Usually yes. Bring your prescription or medication details and a doctor can review your treatment and, if appropriate, arrange a supply. Do not rely on informal sellers to refill it here.
