What is oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a hormone and neuropeptide made naturally in the brain's hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. The body produces it during physical touch, intimacy and social bonding, which is why it is often nicknamed the "bonding" or "love" hormone. In medicine, synthetic oxytocin is FDA-approved as an injectable (under names such as Pitocin and Syntocinon) for obstetric use, including inducing labour and managing bleeding after childbirth. The intranasal spray used for bonding, mood and intimacy is a different, compounded form that is not FDA-approved for these purposes. At Menscape Clinic in Bangkok, it is prescribed off-label and compounded by a licensed pharmacy partner under medical supervision.
