AICAR

AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide, also called acadesine or AICA-riboside) is a nucleoside, not a peptide. It activates an energy-sensing enzyme called AMPK, which is why researchers describe it as an "exercise mimetic": in animal studies it switched on some of the same metabolic pathways that endurance training does. Most of the evidence for endurance and fat metabolism comes from rodents, and there is no approved clinical use for weight loss. It is also prohibited in competitive sport. At Menscape Clinic in Bangkok, AICAR is discussed only as an experimental, research-stage compound, never as a proven treatment.

Our solutions for Weight-Loss Management

What AICAR is studied for

Indications evaluated in research, listed in order of current evidence weight. Suitability is determined case-by-case.

AMPK activation

Studied as a direct activator of AMPK, the cellular energy sensor that the body normally switches on during exercise and calorie restriction.

Endurance (preclinical)

In a widely cited mouse study, sedentary animals given AICAR ran longer than untreated ones. This endurance finding is animal data and has not been confirmed in human trials.

AICAR therapy at Menscape Clinic Bangkok

Fat oxidation

Researched in rodents for its effect on fatty-acid oxidation and a shift toward more oxidative muscle fibres. Human evidence for body-composition change is lacking.

Insulin sensitivity

Studied in animal models for improving glucose uptake into muscle through an insulin-independent, AMPK-driven pathway. Not validated as a metabolic therapy in people.

Cardiac protection

The most extensive human data is from heart-surgery trials (under the name acadesine), where a large Phase III study was stopped for futility. This is unrelated to weight or fitness use.

What is AICAR?

AICAR is a small-molecule nucleoside, chemically AICA-riboside (also known as acadesine). It is sometimes grouped with research peptides by suppliers, but it is not a peptide. Inside cells it is converted to a compound that mimics AMP, the signal of low cellular energy, and this activates AMPK, the master enzyme the body uses to manage fuel during exercise and fasting. Because AMPK activation triggers some of the same downstream changes as endurance training, scientists describe AICAR as an exercise mimetic. It is important to be clear that this is a research-stage compound. It has no approved indication for weight loss, fitness, or general metabolic health anywhere, and the bulk of the supporting data is preclinical.

How AICAR is thought to work

AICAR works by activating AMPK, which then signals the cell to burn fuel rather than store it. In laboratory and animal research, this has been linked to greater fatty-acid oxidation, increased mitochondrial density, a shift toward oxidative (endurance-type) muscle fibres, and glucose uptake into muscle through a pathway that does not depend on insulin. In the well-known Salk Institute mouse study, animals that received AICAR without training showed improved running endurance. These mechanisms are biologically interesting, but almost all of this work is in cells and rodents. How, or whether, these effects translate to body composition or performance in humans has not been established in controlled trials.

Who AICAR research is relevant to

Interest in AICAR comes mostly from men exploring metabolic health, endurance, and fat loss who have read about exercise-mimetic compounds. It is essential to set expectations honestly: AICAR is not an approved weight-loss medicine and is not a substitute for nutrition, training, or evidence-based therapies. Anyone who competes in any sport tested under anti-doping rules should know that AICAR is prohibited at all times. Men with cardiovascular, metabolic, kidney, or liver conditions, and anyone on other medications, fall well outside the limited research base and should treat this compound with particular caution.

How AICAR is approached at Menscape Clinic in Bangkok

At Menscape Clinic in Bangkok, AICAR is treated strictly as an experimental, research-stage compound, not as an off-the-shelf therapy. Any conversation starts with a medical consultation and a full review of your history, goals, current medications, and bloodwork. Because human evidence for metabolic or weight use is so limited and the regulatory status is restrictive, our clinicians will in most cases steer you toward approved, better-evidenced options for weight management. We do not make performance or fat-loss promises about AICAR, and we will not support its use to circumvent anti-doping rules. Our role is to give English-speaking and visiting patients accurate information and medically supervised guidance.

Doctor-led, evidence-first

Any conversation about AICAR starts with a physician explaining what the research does and does not yet show — never a sales pitch.

No grey-market supply

We do not sell AICAR over the counter or source it from unregulated suppliers, and it is never handed out on request.

Honest about the unknowns

Because human safety data is limited or absent, we say so plainly rather than imply a proven or routine treatment.

Research-stage, not a routine offering

We treat AICAR as an experimental, research-stage compound — not a standard program we market or promote.

Frequently asked questions about AICAR

Is AICAR FDA approved or legal?

AICAR is not FDA approved for any indication. It was studied in humans under the name acadesine for protection during heart surgery, and a large Phase III trial was stopped for futility. It has no approved use for weight loss, endurance, or fitness. Possession and personal use rules vary by country, so check local law. In sport, AICAR is prohibited.

Is AICAR banned in sport?

Yes. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibits AICAR at all times, in and out of competition, as an AMPK activator under the Hormone and Metabolic Modulators category. It has been on the prohibited list for over a decade. If you are a tested athlete, using AICAR would be an anti-doping violation.

Is AICAR a peptide?

No. AICAR is a nucleoside (AICA-riboside, also called acadesine), not a peptide. It is sometimes sold alongside research peptides, which causes confusion, but it is a different class of molecule that works by activating the AMPK enzyme.

Does AICAR actually cause weight loss?

There is no human trial evidence showing AICAR causes weight loss. The fat-oxidation and metabolic findings come mainly from rodent studies. It may influence fat metabolism in animals, but its effect on body composition in people has not been demonstrated, so it should not be viewed as a weight-loss treatment.

Is AICAR safe?

The safety of AICAR for metabolic or fitness use in humans is not well established, because that use has not been properly studied in trials. The largest human exposure was intravenous, in a surgical setting, and is not comparable to fitness use. Quality and purity of research-grade material is also a real concern. Any consideration of AICAR should happen only under medical supervision after a full assessment.

Can I get AICAR at Menscape Clinic in Bangkok?

AICAR is handled at Menscape Clinic in Bangkok only as an experimental research-stage compound, and only after a medical consultation. Because human evidence for weight or metabolic use is limited and its status is restrictive, our clinicians will usually recommend approved, better-evidenced weight-management options instead. We do not promise results and will not support use that breaks anti-doping rules.
