Key takeaways
Fluorouracil plus salicylic acid is a topical prescription solution for warts (verrucae): a cytotoxic that targets wart tissue combined with a keratolytic that strips away the hard surface.
It is painted onto the wart only, usually once or twice daily for up to about six weeks. Results are gradual, not instant, and not every wart clears.
In Thailand topical fluorouracil is a prescription medicine, not an over-the-counter product. It must come from a doctor or licensed pharmacist, and a clinician should first confirm the lesion really is a wart.
It must never be used in pregnancy because fluorouracil can harm a developing baby, and it is not the right first choice for genital or facial warts. A doctor decides the safest option for where your wart is.
01
What fluorouracil + salicylic acid is & how it works
Warts are small, rough growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infecting the top layer of skin. The virus drives skin cells to multiply too fast, building up the thick, hard tissue you can see and feel. Common warts on the hands, plantar warts on the soles, and genital warts are all caused by different HPV types.
This solution works on the problem two ways. Fluorouracil (5-FU) is an antimetabolite: it enters fast-dividing, HPV-infected skin cells and jams the machinery they use to copy their DNA and RNA, so those cells stop multiplying and die off. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic: it softens and dissolves the hard, built-up surface of the wart, thinning it down and helping the fluorouracil reach the living cells underneath. The liquid dries into a film that holds both ingredients against the wart.
It is a treatment, not an overnight fix. Warts clear gradually over several weeks of consistent daily use, and because it is painted onto the wart only, it is deliberately kept off healthy skin, which the fluorouracil can also irritate. Whether it is the right option depends on the type of wart, where it is, and your health history, which is what the doctor's assessment is for.
HPV infects the skin
The wart virus makes surface skin cells multiply and thicken into a rough, raised growth.
Salicylic acid strips the surface
The keratolytic softens and removes the hard outer layer, thinning the wart and opening a path inward.¹
Fluorouracil targets wart cells
The 5-FU antimetabolite blocks DNA and RNA synthesis in the fast-dividing infected cells, so they stop multiplying.²
The wart clears gradually
Over roughly six weeks of daily use, treated warts shrink and shed; some need a longer course or a different method.⁶

Getting fluorouracil + salicylic acid in Thailand
Thai FDA status
Topical fluorouracil is a prescription medicine in Thailand, not something you can pick off a pharmacy shelf. This combination is sold in Thailand under brands such as Verrumal. Simpler salicylic-acid-only wart paints are available over the counter, but the fluorouracil version needs a prescription.⁴
How Menscape dispenses it
You get it after a doctor or licensed pharmacist confirms the lesion is a wart and that this treatment is appropriate. At Menscape the medicine is dispensed through a licensed pharmacy for pickup or delivery, with clear instructions on applying it to the wart only.
Safety vs the grey market
Online wart-removal kits and imported fluorouracil creams are common and risky. You cannot be sure of the concentration, and fluorouracil on the wrong spot, or on a lesion that is not actually a wart, can ulcerate healthy skin. A clinician first rules out look-alikes such as corns, calluses, molluscum, or, rarely, skin cancer.
Thai FDA. Fluorouracil is a prescription-controlled cytotoxic medicine. The Thai FDA repeatedly warns against buying prescription drugs from unlicensed online sellers, where counterfeits are common and no one is accountable for what you receive.⁵
03
Does it work? The evidence
Wart treatments are more modest than most people expect, and warts often clear on their own eventually, but treatment speeds that up. In pooled placebo-controlled trials summarised by a Cochrane review, topical salicylic-acid preparations cleared warts in roughly half of people, compared with about a third left untreated.³ Adding fluorouracil is intended to push clearance higher on thick, stubborn warts by directly attacking the infected cells.
Two things to expect. First, it is gradual: you apply it daily and judge progress over about six weeks, not days. Second, it does not work for everyone or every wart. Plantar warts on thick sole skin and large or clustered warts are harder, and some will need cryotherapy, in-clinic removal, or a different medicine. Genital warts in particular are usually better handled by a doctor with a method chosen for that area.

04
Side effects & who shouldn't use it
Common local effects
Redness, stinging or burning, peeling and mild soreness at the treated spot are common and expected while the medicine works on the wart. Getting it onto the healthy skin around the wart makes these worse.
When to stop and call us
Overuse, or spreading it onto normal skin, can cause painful ulcers, blistering or open sores that are slow to heal. Stop and contact the clinic if you get spreading ulceration, signs of infection, or severe pain.
Not suitable for
Do not use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as fluorouracil can harm a developing baby. It is also not for children, for people with the rare enzyme deficiency DPD, or on the face, moles, birthmarks, or broken or inflamed skin. Diabetics and anyone with poor foot circulation need a doctor's guidance before treating foot warts.
Genital warts & precautions
It is not a first-line choice for genital, anal or mucosal warts, which a doctor usually treats with a method chosen for delicate skin. Avoid using other harsh topicals on the same area at the same time, and keep it well away from the eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Alternatives & combinations
In-clinic · genital & stubborn warts
Wart removal procedures
For genital or persistent warts, a doctor can remove them in clinic with cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery or trichloroacetic acid, often faster and better suited to delicate areas.
Topical · self-applied
Salicylic acid alone
Salicylic-acid-only paints and plasters are sold over the counter for simple hand and foot warts, and are a reasonable first step before moving to a prescription option.
Topical · genital warts
Imiquimod or podophyllotoxin
For external genital warts specifically, doctors more often prescribe immune-activating imiquimod or podophyllotoxin, which are chosen for use on that area.

A licensed Thai physician reviews your case by video call or in clinic at Asoke, confirms the growth is a wart, and decides whether this treatment suits its type and location.
Prescription, if suitable
If it is appropriate, you receive a prescription and the solution is dispensed by a licensed pharmacy for pickup or delivery, with instructions on applying it to the wart only.
Follow-up & review
A check-in to see how the wart is responding, so the plan can switch to cryotherapy, in-clinic removal or another option if needed.
The doctor decides. Starting a conversation is not a commitment and does not guarantee a prescription. If this solution is not right for your wart, your doctor will explain the better option.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy this wart solution over the counter in Thailand?
No. The fluorouracil-containing solution is a prescription medicine, so it must come from a doctor or licensed pharmacist. Salicylic-acid-only wart paints are sold over the counter, but they are weaker and not right for every wart. A clinician should first confirm the growth really is a wart.
How long does it take to clear a wart?
Expect gradual change over about six weeks of daily application, not overnight. Thick plantar warts and large clusters can take longer, and some need a second method such as freezing.
Does it hurt or damage the skin around the wart?
Some redness, stinging and peeling on the wart itself is normal and expected. The problem comes from getting it on healthy skin, where fluorouracil can cause soreness or ulcers, which is why it is painted onto the wart only.
Can I use it on genital warts?
Genital, anal and mucosal warts are usually treated differently, because that skin is delicate. A doctor will typically recommend in-clinic removal or a medicine made for that area rather than this solution.
Is it safe to use during pregnancy?
No. Fluorouracil can harm a developing baby, so it must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
What if the wart comes back?
Warts can recur, because the treatment clears the visible growth but the HPV virus can linger in the skin. If a wart returns or a new one appears, a follow-up lets the doctor choose the next step.
How is it different from freezing a wart off?
Freezing (cryotherapy) is a quick in-clinic procedure done over a few sessions, while this solution is a home treatment you apply daily over weeks. Neither works every time, and doctors often combine or switch between them.
I already use a wart treatment from abroad. Can I continue it here?
Usually yes. Bring the details of what you are using, and a local doctor can review it, confirm the diagnosis, and provide a prescription if it is appropriate to continue.
